What you need to know about The Old Trading Post, Mtakatyi River, Wild Coast Accommodation and its surrounds:

We are 75km from the nearest city of Umtata (28km of Tar Road, 46km of Gravel Road, of which SUV, 4X2 and 4X4 are best suited), 46km from the closest town to buy supplies, and we are off the grid! This means we manage our own refuse and collect rain water in tanks for bathing and drinking.

We have two houses on The Old Trading Post smallholding, one recently renovated three bedroom six sleeper boasting a 180 degree view of The Mtakatyi River Valley below, great to wake up to with your morning coffee and the other, just adjacent to the newly renovated cottage a two bedroom en-suite four sleeper cottage also has spectacular views overlooking The Mtakatyi River Valley.

The Old Trading Post smallholding is a short walk to the river, approximately 20 minutes, but has quite a steep gradient to get down and up, so make sure you have suitable footwear. Alternatively there is a 4X4 (only) route down to the river on the same path as the walk, to where you will find a tranquil, laid back grass park to enjoy sun downers, as you enjoy the bird life, and possible activity of fishermen catching a great many species in the river.

Should you wish to get to the beach, you will be spoilt with three choices and will be lucky to have the beach all to yourself, unless of course the cows feel like taking a stroll! The very beautiful Mtakatyi River Mouth and Estuary, Presley Bay, which is unchallenged for beauty for a day at the beach, and Lwandile which is a great 1km stretch of beach just South of Presley Bay.

Please be aware that the Wild Coast does NOT have SHARK nets and is NOT monitored by LIFE GUARDS.

Mtakatyi River is very well known for its variety of fish species in the Estuary and you are welcome to bring a fishing rod to try your luck! Well known species in the Mtakatyi River include King Fish (GT, big eye and yellow tail), Spotted Grunter, Kabeljou, Springer, Bull Shark, Skip Jack, Mullet, River Prawns, Mussels and Oysters in the Mtakatyi River Mouth! The local fishermen try their hand daily for a catch, they will often approach you to purchase some of their harvest. Prawns are very seasonal but, are a delicious meal to make at home. Oysters and Mussels are sold at the River Mouth and other areas. Please ensure that the produce you purchase from the fishermen is fresh  from the River or Ocean. The ocean is a governed resource, so permits (bait, fishing and collection) are needed. Theses permits are available at any Post Office. The cost of permits vary according to your preference of species. Please ensure you have an identification document available when going to apply.

Mtakatyi Community:

Mtakatyi is very remote and is located in the Transkei Homelands of the Xhosa Natives of Southern Africa. The community in and around Mtakatyi generally speak Xhosa with a few who speak English or Afrikaans, you may ask one of our friendly staff to help you translate should you need some assistance.
