Joint, Bong, Pipe or Blunt: A Field Guide to the Hardware

Four tribes have been arguing across every stoep and dorm room since the dawn of the ritual, and they will argue until the sun burns out: the joint people, the bong people, the pipe people, and the blunt people, each convinced the other three are doing it wrong. They are all a little bit right and all a little bit deluded, which is the human condition in miniature. Here is the honest field guide to the hardware, so you can pick your weapon knowing what it actually does, instead of what the loudest person at the braai told you.

The four weapons

The joint is the classic for a reason: portable, sociable, disposable, nothing to wash, nothing to carry home. Roll it, smoke it, and the evidence is ash. The cost is your skill, because a badly rolled joint runs down one side, canoes, and burns hot and harsh, and rolling well is a genuine hand-craft that takes a hundred bad ones to learn. Master it and you carry your whole kit in a pocket.

The bong trades portability for smoothness. Pulling the smoke through water cools it and strips some of the harshness, so the hit is bigger and easier on the throat, which is exactly the trap: a bong makes it very easy to take far more in one lungful than you meant to, so it rewards the impatient with a coughing fit and a spinning room. It also needs carrying, filling and, if you have any self-respect, cleaning, because a neglected bong turns into a swamp that ruins the taste of everything.

The pipe is the pragmatist’s tool. Small, tough, instant, no rolling and no water to slosh: pack the bowl, spark it, done. It burns hotter and drier than a bong and hides in a pocket like a joint, the honest middle path for a quick private session, and it too turns foul if you never clean it.

The blunt is the heavyweight, cannabis rolled in a tobacco leaf wrap, slow-burning, strong, and built for a crowd and a long evening. Understand that the wrap means you are adding tobacco to the equation, with everything that carries, so it is its own thing, not a bigger joint.

The one rule under all four

Whichever tribe claims you, the sane rule is the same across all of them: this is smoke, and smoke is never a health food, so if you partake, go slow, especially with the water pipe that makes overdoing it so easy, and especially as a visitor in an unfamiliar place. Start small, wait, and remember you can always have more and can never have less. Keep it private, keep it adult, keep it lawful, and keep the fancy glass clean.
